About Punjab
Punjab is the land of five rivers and also called
the Granary of India. Punjab has
the distinction of being one of the most prosperous state. The Punjab
state borders the Punjab province of Pakistan to the west, Jammu and Kashmir to
the north, Himachal Pradesh to the northeast, Haryana to the south and
southeast, the Union Territory of Chandigarh to the southeast and Rajasthan to
the southwest. The total area of the state is 50,362 square kilometers (19,445
square miles). The population is 24,289,296 (2000). Punjab's capital is
Chandigarh which is administered separately as a Union Territory since it is
also the capital of neighboring Haryana.
The word "Punjab" is a combination of the Persian words 'Panj' (پانج) five,
and 'Aab' (آب) water, giving the literal meaning of the Land of the
Five Rivers. The five rivers which Punjab is named after are the Jhelum; the
Chenab; the Ravi; the Beas and the Sutlej.
Districts of Punjab
Punjab state is divided into 17 administrative districts: Amritsar, Bathinda,
Firozpur, Faridkot, Fatehgarh Sahib, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar,
Kapurthala, Ludhiana, Mansa, Moga, Muktsar, Nawan Shehar, Patiala, Rupnagar, and
Sangrur.
Regions of Punjab
Culturally, the state of Punjab is divided in 3
regions Majha, Doaba and Malwa. The rivers marks the boundary of these regions.
Each region is also called a "folk region".
Majha:
Also called "Upper Bari Doab" . The region is surrounded by three rivers Ravi in
the west, Beas in the east and Sutlej in the south. It consists of districts of
Amritsar and Gurdaspur. It has an area of 8658 square kilometers, 17.17 percent
of the total area of Punjab. Majha is the most densely populated area of Punjab.
Majha contributes around 21 percent of population of the state. Amritsar
is the largest populated city of the region.
Majha has hot
summers and cold winters. Summers witness maximum temperature ranging between
40- 45 degree Celsius. Winters are cold and minimum temperature sometimes
ranging below 0 degree Celsius. The region receives moderate rainfall of 50 cm
per year. Important industries include cotton, sugar, wool and textiles
Ravi
in the west, Beas
in the east and Sutlej in the
south
Doaba:
Also called the Bist Doaba Region. This land between the rivers of Beas and
Sutlej makes the Doaba region. It consists of the districts of Hoshiarpur,
Jalandhar, Nawan Shehar, Kapurthala and parts of Fazilka. It has an area of 8844
square kilometers, 17.6 percent of the total area of Punjab. It is triangular in
shape, with it base at Himachal Border and the apex at the Beas Sutlej
confluence.
Doaba has a
continental climate. Temperature in summer ranges from 30 to 32 degrees Celsius.
Maximum temperature can go up to 45 degrees Celsius. Winters are cold with
normal temperaure falling between 10-15 degree Celsius.
Doaba is
densely populated region, accounting for 19.64 percent of the population of
Punjab. Jalandhar is most populated district of the region. Major Industries in
this region include cotton textiles, sugar, leather and paper. Jalandhar is
famous for production of sports goods, hand tools and garden tools.
Malwa:
The area south of Sutlej is called Malwa. It is surrounded by river Sutlej in
the south, the river Ghaggar in the south, the Shivalik Hills and Pakistan in
the west. Malwa constitutes 11 districts.
Malwa
the largest part of the Punjab is divided into the following 12
districts after the names of their headquarters. The districts are
Bathinda, Faridkot, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ferozepur, Ludhiana, Mansa,
Moga, Muktsar, Nawanshehar, Patiala, Ropar, Sangrur.
Weather of Malwa is comparatively
hot, dry and arid.
Summers are hot, with the mean temperature in Ludhiana being 32.5
degrees Celsius while maximum temperature goes up to 49 degrees
Celsius in Summers. The mean temperature in winter is 14.1 degrees
Celsius.
Malwa
is sparsely populated region,
accounting for 59.07 percent of the population of Punjab. Ludhiana
is most populated district of the region and Punjab. Major
Industries in this region include cotton, sugar and paper. Ludhiana
is famous for production of auto parts, machine tools, textiles,
yarns, cycles and hosiery industry.
